5 Reasons why your anti aging skincare is not working

The habits that we develop in our 20s and 30s have a huge impact on how we look and feel when we are older. It is so important to treat your body with respect and care in order to maintain optimal physical and mental health as we age. Here are some avoidable culprits that speed up the aging process.

You can’t always reverse aging itself (it’s a natural part of life!), but correcting these habits can help slow any premature aging. Knowing what they are is the first step!

#1 - You tan a lot

Sun exposure is responsible for most of the visible aging of your skin—far more than all other factors combined! Yes, UV rays from the sun are the primary cause of wrinkles, pigmentation, sun spots, reduced skin elasticity, the degradation of skin texture, and many other signs of skin aging. The ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate into the skin. There, they damage the elastic fibers that keep skin firm, allowing wrinkles to develop. Sunlight is also responsible for age spots or "liver spots" on the hands, face, and other sun-exposed areas.

#2 - You don't get enough sleep or you sleep very late at night

Shortly after you fall asleep, your body begins secreting somatotropin, also known as human growth hormone (hGH), which plays a crucial role in the development, maintenance, and repair of skin. Notably, hGH is required for the production of collagen, a protein found in the skin that makes it look plump and youthful.

Studies have revealed that the maximum amount of HGH is released at midnight during 10-12 pm. Poor quality sleep means the amount of HGH produced in your body is low. So, thats why it doesn't matter if you sleep 10-12 hours a day but if you after 12pm then you are missing your beauty sleep (aka: collagen production time)

#3 - You smoke

Here’s something to think about the next time you put a cigarette to your lips: The skin around those lips is going to look older, faster. You’re also more likely to get bags under your eyes sooner. And jowls. And more wrinkles around those lips.

Tobacco smoke contains thousands of toxic chemicals that can damage the cells of your skin and lead to signs of premature aging. Smoking can cause deeper wrinkles on the face, particularly between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and around the mouth and lips.

There are more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, and many of them trigger the destruction of collagen and elastin. These are the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. Smoking or even being around secondhand smoke "degrades the building blocks of the skin," The consequences include sagging skin and deeper wrinkles

#4 - You drink alcohol

Drinking is classified as two drinks a day. There’s a huge amount of damage to the skin that occurs; alcohol affects any mucous membrane, from the pancreas and liver to the skin. The first effect is dehydration, as it actually takes all the fluid out of the skin. If you look at a woman who has been drinking for 20 or 30 years, and a woman the same age who hasn’t at all, we see a massive difference in the skin—more wrinkles from that dehydration damage, which can make you look 10 years older.

"Alcohol is actually one of the worst, most aggressive compounds to destroy your skin,” says New York nutritionist Jairo Rodriguez

Tip #5 - You don’t do facials

Facials help to renew skin cells by circulating the blood flow under the skin, which then can decrease puffiness and fluid build up that comes from our lymphatic system. Good circulation is important in that it brings oxygen, proteins and nutrition to the skin, while ridding our skin of toxins.

And for those who take their skin seriously, a laser facial is a Must! Skincare creams and serums are a great addition to help fight against aging, BUT they have its limitations. They can only penetrate superficially so will improve the "appearance" of fine lines, help brightening, hydrating and all that good stuff, but do not expect a dramatic change.

One of my favorite treatments, is Exilis™ Facial. Uses radiofrequency energy and ultrasound waves to penetrate deep within the skin. Unlike other non-invasive treatments, Exilis Ultra™ skin tightening treatment can penetrate deep into skin layers. When the heat reaches these deep layers, it prompts the skin cells to build collagen and thicken;

  • The procedure is simple and requires no real recovery time.

  • It produces long-lasting results.

  • You could get great results in just one session, although some people need a series of sessions.

  • It tightens loose skin on the face and neck.

  • You’ll see tighter, smoother skin.

"We start to lose 10 percent of our total collagen stores each decade, [so] younger patients will often do RF treatments to increase their collagen reserves," says Dr. Kappel" - California-based board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Stefani Kappel, M.D.
